Our Mission
Written by Corrine Morales
The purpose of a portable textile bucket for clean water is to help those who need to travel long distances to wells (and other communal locations) in order to get clean water. Above is a video of a social experiment conducted by UNICEF that sees how far people will walk on a treadmill for just one bottle of water. This experiment hopes to bring to light the struggles of the people of Somalia. For example, as the provided video states, children in Somalia have to walk about 10 km (approximately 6.2 m) for water, or even as far as 50 km (approximately 31 m) during droughts.
This all makes the need for a portable, lightweight container extremely urgent. The target demographic for this product would not access to copious amounts of money, so using less expensive, synthetic materials will decrease weight and enable easier reproduction.
Our team set out to design a bucket that is portable when full of water and must be able to hang on a hook, holds at least one gallon of water without leaking for one minute, foldable/compressible when empty, fit completely inside a 6”x6”x6” container when collapsed, be no larger than 30 inches when full of water, contain at least fifty percent fibrous materials, and must not include pre-made items. Because this item is designed to have the purpose of transporting clean drinking water our design cannot include harmful chemicals, dangerous projectiles, explosives, fire, sharp objects, chemical reactions, heat, high voltage, etc.
